Drunk Driver Crashes Into Long Island Home, Vehicle Bursts Into Flames: Police

Residents in the home, including a child, were not injured; a passenger in the car had minor injuries, police say.

WATER MILL, NY — A drunk driver speeding in Water Mill lost control and crashed into a home as his vehicle burst into flames, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, a 911 call came in at 1:14 a.m. Sunday morning from a home on Hayground Road reporting that a vehicle crashed into their home and burst into fire, police said.

Two adults and one child who were in the residence at the time of the crash were not injured, police said.

The house suffered significant damage, police said.

Two people were in the vehicle; the passenger of the vehicle suffered a minor injury to her hand and was transported to Southampton Hospital for medical treatment, while the driver, Alec H. Wasser, 21, of Water Mill was not injured, police said.

Initial investigation indicates the car was traveling northbound on Hayground Road at a high rate of speed
when the driver lost control of the vehicle; further investigation revealed that the driver was intoxicated, police said.

Wasser was charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, as well as failure to maintain his lane of travel, speed unreasonable and imprudent, a traffic infraction, and failure to use designated lane of travel, all traffic infractions, police said.

He was arrested at the scene, transported to police headquarters for processing, and held for
morning arraignment, police said.
