Elderly Man Rescued From Shinnecock Hills House Fire By Heroes: Officials

A police officer forced open the door; the fire chief carried the man to safety. The fire was quickly extinguished, officials say.

SHINNECOCK HILLS, NY — An elderly man was rescued from a house fire in Shinnecock Hills early Saturday, fire officials said.

According to Chris Brenner, public information officer for the Southampton Fire Department, at 3:07 a.m., the Southampton Fire Department was called out for an automatic fire alarm on Inlet Road East in Shinnecock Hills.

Southampton Fire Department Chief Polis Walker and Southampton Town Police Officer Kevin O'Brien arrived shortly after, Brenner said.

Officer O'Brien stated that he could see smoke in the residence. Officer O'Brien was able to force open the door and an elderly man was found on the second floor, Brenner said. The man was suffering from smoke inhalation, Brenner said.

Chief Walker was able to carry the man down the stairs to safety, Brenner said.

Officer O'Brien was able to knock down the fire with a fire extinguisher, Brenner said. Other units arrived and were able to fully extinguish the fire, he added.

Chief Walker requested mutual aid departments to the scene but they were eventually released due to the fire being under control, Brenner said.

Southampton Volunteer Ambulance responded and transported the injured man to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Brenner said.

Southampton Town fire marshals responded to investigate; crews were back in service at 4:31 a.m., Brenner said.

"The Chief's Office wants to thank the the officer who responded and the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance for their hard work. It is so amazing, how great our departments work together," Chief Walker said.
