Katy’s Courage, a not-for-profit organization created in memory of Katy Steward dedicated to education, pediatric cancer research and childhood bereavement, will host Katy’s Courage 5K 2012, the second annual run in Katy Stewart’s honor, on Saturday April 28. Registration and check-in will take place from 7 to 8:15 a.m. and the race will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. All runners, both competitive and noncompetitive, are more than welcome to join. Cost is $25 to pre-register and $30 for day-of registration. Proceeds will benefit a scholarship awarded to a Pierson and East Hampton High School student, a donation to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the creation of the first East End childhood bereavement center.
Register online for the event at http://bit.ly/z3H51i. There will be prizes for top three overall male and female participants. Runners will start at 21 West Water Street, head north and make a right onto Main Street. Runners will then make a right onto Glover Street, run through the Redwood section of the course and finish back on Water Street.

Last year, Thomas O’Donoghue and Andrea Pizzanelli, family friends of Stewart, organized the event. Between 1,700 and 1,800 participated in the inaugural event. Overall winners of last year’s race included: Mike Semlws from Sag Harbor with a time of 17:48; Ross Kadri from East Hampton with a time of 18:06; Luis Ramires of Water Mill with a time of 18:08; Laura Brown of Westhampton with a time of 19:19; Kathryn Hess of East Hampton with a time of 20:24; and Alexandra Copeland of Brooklyn with a time of 20:50.

Katy’s Courage, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization created to honor Katy Stewart, an inspirational 12-year-old girl who died from hepatoblastoma, a rare form of pediatric liver cancer, is dedicated in the fields of education, pediatric cancer research and bereavement counsel to help families and young people through scholarships, donations and a long-term investment in creating a childhood bereavement center on the East End.
