Hit and Run Driver Strikes Pedestrian on Flanders Road: Police

BREAKING: The search is on for the driver of an SUV who hit a man and fled the scene, police said.

RIVERSIDE, NY — A hit-and-run driver fled the scene after striking a pedestrian on Flanders Road Sunday, police said.

Southampton Town Police and New York State Troopers responded Sunday at 6:07 p.m. to 141 Flanders Road in Riverside, where a man was found on the south shoulder of the road, looking as though he'd been hit by a vehicle, police said.

Flanders Ambulance responded to treat the injured man, who was then flown to Stony Brook University Hospital via the Suffolk County Police aviation in serious condition, police said.

Further investigation revealed that an unknown sport utility vehicle had hit the man as he
crossed the roadway in a crosswalk near 125 Flanders Road, police said.

The man was hit as he crossed from the north side to the south side of the street, police said.

The vehicle sustained front end passenger side damage of its light cluster and was last seen heading east along Flanders Road while fleeing the scene, police said.

No further description of the vehicle or its driver is available, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Department's detective division is actively investigating the incident, police said.
