Man Assaulted In North Sea Home: Cops

A man entered a home unlawfully and threw a flower pot at a former acquaintance during an altercation, police said.

NORTH SEA, NY —A North Sea man was arrested after assaulting a former acquaintance in his home, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, Juan Carlos Melendez, 41, was arrested on Tuesday after he entered a North Sea residence unlawfully to confront the man.

A physical altercation ensued between Melendez and the man inside the home; Melendez threw a ceramic flower pot, which broke and caused the man to have a laceration, police said.

Melendez fled the area and was located at his home a short distance away, police said. He was taken into custody by Southampton Town community response officers and transported to Southampton Town Police headquarters, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Department's detective division conducted an investigation into the matter and subsequently charged Melendez with first degree burglary, second degree assault, third degree criminal mischief, fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

Melendez was held for morning arraignment at Southampton Town Justice Court on Sept. 12, police said.
