Man Charged With BWI After Boating Crash
Three, including the intoxicated boat captain, were hurt when the boat crashed and overturned, police say.
SAG HARBOR, NY — A Sag Harbor man was arrested and charged with boating while intoxicated after his vessel crashed and overturned with five people onboard, police said.
According to Southampton Town Police, Gary Lucas, 66, was charged with BWI, a misdemeanor, under New York State navigation law; on Saturday at 11:23 p.m., police received a call about a boat crashing into a dock and overturning at 370 Ferry Road in North Haven.
Police officers, detectives, and bay constables, along with Sag Harbor Ambulance and the Sag Harbor Fire Department, responded.

Lucas was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for injuries to his face and leg; two other passengers were transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and treated for their injuries, police said. The other two passengers were not hurt, police said.
An investigation revealed that Lucas was intoxicated while operating his 2018 39-foot vessel; he was arrested and released at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital on an appearance ticket, police said.

Lucas is scheduled to return to Southampton Town Justice Court at a future date for arraignment purposes; he may be facing other charges after the ongoing investigation, police said.
