Man Charged With Driving While Impaired By Drugs After Crash: PD
He tried to run away after crashing into a utility pole and cracking it in half, police say.
EASTPORT, NY — A Southampton man was arrested in Eastport and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs after he crashed into a utility pole and ran away, police said.
According to Southampton Town Police, the crash took place on Sunday at 5:40 a.m. on Tuttle Avenue; a car left the roadway, hitting the utility pole and cracking it in half.
Letcher Johnson, 56, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor DWAI and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with property damage, a violation, police said.

Johnson fled the area on foot, heading east down Montauk Highway; he was found down the road from the crash, police said. During the investigation, he was found to be under the influence of drugs, police said.
Johnson was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries; while there, he was arrested and charged, police said. He was released on an appearance ticket for a later date, police said.
