Man Charged With DWI After Flanders Crash: Police
After hitting a utility pole, he left the scene on foot but was found a short distance away, police say.
FLANDERS, NY — A Hampton Bays man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated early Saturday after he hit a utility pole and left the scene, police said.
Southampton Town police said the incident took place at 5:05 a.m. at the intersection of Flanders and Bellows Pond Roads.
Mateo Torres, 29, left the scene on foot but was located a short distance away; he admitted to driving the vehicle and losing control while making a turn, police said.

Torres smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage, had bloodshot, glassy eyes, and performed poorly on standardize field sobriety tests, police said. He was arrested, charged with DWI, and taken to police headquarters for processing, authorities said.
