Man Points Shotgun at Cops, Barricades Himself in House During Tense Standoff: Police

Hostage negotiators, along with police, responded to the scene.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY-An armed man pointed a shotgun at police and barricaded himself in a Hamptons Bays home Friday night during a tense stand-off, authorities said.

Scott E. Saunders, 49, of Hampton Bays, was arrested and charged with menacing a police officer, a felony, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor, aggravated harassment in the second degree, a misdemeanor and criminal mischief in the fourth degree, misdemeanor, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, a call came in at 6 p.m. about a man, armed with a shotgun, who was “acting in a tumultuous manner” at a home on Re Court in Hampton Bays.

Officers from the Southampton Town Police Department and New York State Troopers responded, police said.

All members of the residence vacated the residence prior to the arrival of the police.

Responding officers arrived on scene and the armed subject pointed a shotgun at them; the man then barricaded himself in his residence, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Department Emergency Services Unit and East Hampton Emergency Services Unit were activated and responded, containing the area. In addition, Riverhead K- 9, and Southampton Town Police hostage negotiators responded.

After extended negotiations, the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody, police said.

Hampton Bays Ambulance responded and took the suspect to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment.

Saunders is scheduled to be arraigned at Southampton Justice Court on Saturday.
