Man Who Fled Scene Of Crash Was Found Intoxicated, With Cocaine: PD

He fled into the woods, police say.

NORTHAMPTON, NY — An Eastport man was arrested after a two-car crash in Northampton Friday night, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place at about 9:10 p.m. at the intersection of Speonk Riverhead Road and County Road 51. Responding officers discovered that one of the drivers had fled the scene of the crash on foot into the woods, police said.

An officer searching the area located the suspect on foot in the woods a short while later and took him into custody, police said.

Alex Cano-Arriega, 31, was found to be intoxicated and in possession of a quantity of cocaine, police said. He was arrested and charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated; seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor; and leaving the scene of a crash, a traffic violation, police said.

He was taken to an area hospital for treatment of a hand injury and released on an appearance ticket for court at a later date, police said.
