Mom Drove Drunk, Stopped To Buy Alcohol With Son, 7, In Car: Police

The child was released to a family member, police say.

EAST QUOGUE, NY — An East Quogue woman was caught driving drunk and stopping to buy alcohol with her 7-year-old son in the car, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, Shannon E. Brown, 37, was arrested Tuesday at 5:36 p.m. after a call was received regarding an intoxicated female purchasing alcohol at the 7-Eleven in East Quogue and then leaving in a vehicle.

Police located the gray 2011 Chevrolet Equinox described on Montauk Highway near Emmett Drive in East Quogue a short time later, authorities said.

The vehicle was stopped and an investigation revealed that Brown was intoxicated and her son was in the vehicle with her, police said.

Brown was arrested charged with aggravated DWI with a child in the vehicle, a felony under Leandra's Law, driving while intoxicated, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor; she was also issued traffic summonses for failing to signal and maintain lane of travel, police said.

She was processed at police headquarters and will be arraigned at Southampton Justice Court Wednesday, police said.

The child was released to the care of a family member, police said.
