New Robotics Club Unveiled At Pierson Middle School

Students are challenged to work together to program and build Lego robots that will eventually compete in local robotics competitions.

SAG HARBOR, NY — There's an exciting new club at Pierson Middle School that has students and educators alike enthused.

A new robotics club at Pierson Middle School is aimed at encouraging students to explore the integrated disciplines of science, technology, engineering, art and math in greater depth while developing skills in collaboration, problem-solving and critical thinking, the district said.

Every week, the club meets under the leadership of adviser and technology teacher Edward Moloney, who recently procured the district an $18,860 Toshiba grant. The funding makes it possible for the district to purchase a Computer Numerical Control Machine that will vastly expand opportunities for students, district officials said.

During each club meeting, students will work together to program and build Lego robots that will eventually compete in local robotics competitions.

"The ideas for the robots begin at the virtual level, where students use computer software and their problem-solving skills to design and virtually construct their prototype," the district said. "Once satisfied, they physically construct and program them to accomplish various tasks required in competition, such as pushing, pulling and picking up items."

The skill sets acquired by students during club meetings, as well as through the district’s extensive STEAM opportunities, has the potential to usher students into in-demand STEAM careers. Careers include aerospace engineering, architects and computer scientists, district officials said.

And beyond the vast educational opportunities created by the club, students agree that it's a fun and exciting way to learn.

“I really enjoy this club because there are endless possibilities to what you can do,” said eighth-grader Kai Breskin.

“It’s fun and interesting to learn about robotics,” added club member Juliana Arrieta, a seventh-grader. “Robots are going to be a big part of the future.”
