Obituary: Matthew Smith Jr., of Southampton, Dies at 59

The grandfather of 13 passed away on Sunday, Feb. 1.

Matthew Smith Jr. was born on Jan. 29, 1956 to the late Mayhew Smith and Helen Gaskin Smith. He died on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015 at the Hamptons Center.

Smith was born in Southampton and attended the public schools in the area.

He was a great athlete and a member of the basketball team.

He graduated from Southampton High School in 1977 and attended Suffolk Community College Culinary School in 2000.

Smith worked several jobs, including Southampton Tennis Courts and a cook at Southampton College. He was a great handy man and extended his services to many.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Albert Brown.

Smith, who was also lovingly known as Zulu/Zu/Buddy, had a profound love for life, his family and friends. He had a heart of gold and touched the lives of many. He was a friend to all that knew him.

Predeceased by his father Mayhew Smith and brother, David Smith Sr., he leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Helen Gaskin Smith of Southampton; three daughters, Rahnesia “Rahni” Smith of Shirley; Rahshell “Shakey” Smith Gamble (Charlie) of Calverton; Racquel “Kelly” Smith of Elizabeth City, NC; one son Erick Smith of Mastic; four sisters, Rena Smalls (Robert), Dorothy Marie Pender (Benjamin), Teresa Mims (Bobby) all of Southampton; Virginia Banks (Roy) of Waterbury, CT; one brother, Jeffery Smith (Donna) of Riverhead; 13 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing took place last Friday morning at Community Baptist Church in Southampton.

The Funeral Service began at the church Friday at noon, Rev. Donald E. Butler officiated. Interment followed at Southampton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
