On January 24, 2015, Sophia M. Isaacs “Jackie” departed this earth at her Southampton home, to be with the Lord. She was born on March 15, 1928 to Gertrude and Henry DeVigne in New York City, NY. She grew up on 98th Street and Central Park West. She held cherished childhood and young adult memories of playing and strolling in Central Park; as well as, good times spent with her close knit “98th St. Gang” -families who looked after one another throughout the Great Depression. Her African American and French ancestry took root in Alabama in the early 1800s.
Sophia was a graduate of Julia Richman High School, NYC. She met her husband, Alban Isaacs, during a WWII victory celebration. They married three years later on July 3, 1948. She was a volunteer typist for the teaching staff of nuns at Our Lady of Loretto in Brooklyn, NYC –the grade school her three children attended. In the early 1960s she worked with James Farmer and the NYC chapter of CORE -Congress of Racial Equality. During the late 1960s and early 1970s Sophia worked with Arthur Levitt, NYS Comptroller, as a stenographer/typist.
Throughout their courtship and marriage of 54 years, Sophia and Alban appreciated the natural beauty of Southampton and visited regularly. In 1976 they made Southampton their home, at which time, Sophia began working with Albert Cavagnaro and later with Michael D. O’Donohoe, Suffolk County Commissioners of Jurors.
During her working and retirement years in Southampton, Sophia was a loving and supportive spouse, mother, grandmother and, great grandmother. Her gentle, kind, light-hearted and, generous spirit is forever etched in the hearts and minds of those whose lives she touched.
Her husband -Alban, and her son –Anthony, predeceased her. Sophia M. Isaacs is survived by two great grandchildren -Catherine and John Bailey; two grandchildren Nadjia and Alban Bailey; granddaughter-in-law Elizabeth Garduno Bailey; two daughters -Paula Isaacs Thompson and Nadine Isaacs Bailey; and, son-in-law John Bailey.
Shermona Thompson, her granddaughter and Sherman Thompson her son-in-law, both predeceased her.
