Update: Police ID Man Killed in 4-Vehicle Crash, Say He May Have Had Medical Issue

A woman airlifted after the crash is now in stable condition, police said.

FLANDERS, NY — Police have identified the man killed in a four-vehicle accident on Flanders Road Monday night as James Sager, 57, of Babylon.

According to Southampton Police Sgt. Susan Ralph, "We are looking at a possible medical issue. We're not ruling anything out."

The cause of the accident will not be known until police receive a medical examiner's report, she said.

Ralph said Sager was heading west and veered into the eastbound lane, striking three other vehicles; the woman in the third vehicle was hit head-on and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, she said. The woman is in stable condition Monday, Ralph said.

Sager was pronounced dead on the scene, she said.

Original story: One person was killed and another airlifted with serious injuries after a four-vehicle crash on Flanders Road Monday night, police said.

According to Southampton Police Sgt. Susan Ralph, the call came in about the accident at 8:04 p.m.; the crash took place near Fireman's Memorial Park with Flanders Road closed down from Bellows Pond Road to Fanning Avenue to Pleasure Drive.

Police have not yet released the identity of either the person killed or the person airlifted by Suffolk County Aviation.

Southampton Police received assistance from New York State Police, Ralph said; "multiple injuries" were sustained in the crash, although it was not immediately clear how many others were taken to area hospitals, she said.

Hampton Bays Ambulance rescue responded, Ralph said.
