Police: Man Arrested For Driving After Inhaling Gas and Taking Pills

The man reportedly struck a street sign, a light pole and almost hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk, police said.

A Sag Harbor man who was driving while impaired from inhaling gas and taking pills, was arrested after driving erratically in East Hampton on Wednesday afternoon, according to East Hampton Village Police.

Police responded to a report of an erratic driver who struck a street sign, a light pole and almost hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk shortly before 4 p.m., police said.

Police found a car matching the description of the report parked in the roadway on Lee Avenue, according to police.

The officer found Scott Smith, 38, slumped towards the center of the car while holding a can of ”dust destroyer” in his right hand close to his face, according to police.

When asked to roll down his window, he was unable to due to his “altered mental state,” police said.

Smith was sweaty and blue in the face, his eyes were glassy and he fumbled several times to open the window, police said.

The officer requested East Hampton Village Ambulance first responder to the scene to check his vitals, but Smith refused medical attention, police said.

When he came to, he admitted to inhaling gas from the cans and taking prescription pills earlier that day, police said.

Smith was arrested for reckless driving, first degree driving while impaired by drugs, leaving the scene of an accident and moved from lane unsafely, police said.

He was transported back to headquarters for processing.
