Puerto Rico Relief Supplies Collected At Stony Brook Southampton Hospital

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Southampton residents are opening their hearts to help those in Puerto Rico struggling for survival.

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is joining Stony Brook Medicine and other local healthcare organizations in providing aid to Puerto Rico through Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Empire State Relief and Recovery Effort, the hospital said.

Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria on September 20, leaving the majority of the island without power and communications. With roads washed out or blocked by debris, food, water, and basic critically necessary supplies are running out as the clock ticks.

To that end, a box has been placed in the main lobby of the Hospital, located at 240 Meeting House Lane in Southampton, to collect items including batteries, flashlights, portable lanterns, diapers, baby wipes, cases of water, and feminine hygiene products.

All donated items must be unopened and in their original packaging.

All supplies collected will be brought to an Empire State Relief and Recovery collection site every weekend beginning Saturday, October 7.

Financial contributions can also be made. Checks can be made payable to Southampton Hospital Foundation with a note clarifying that it is for the Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fund. All checks should be mailed to the Foundation at 240 Meeting House Lane, Southampton, NY 11968.

Additionally, Stony Brook Medicine is rounding up medical personnel, including some from Southampton, to send to Puerto Rico and provide clinical aid to hospitals throughout the island.

“It’s important to lend a hand to those who need it most,” said Steven Bernstein, Chief Development Officer at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Southampton Hospital Foundation President. “We are willing to do whatever we can to help Puerto Rico recover from this devastating storm.”
