School News - Week of June 23-27

Afterschool Parrish Program:  For the past month the Parrish Art Museum has been running an art afterschool program here at Tuckahoe school. The students in this group are a mixed age group with great artistic qualities. The group has explored the ideas of artistic still life, seascapes and creative use of watercolor techniques under the direction of Parrish art educator, Madolin Archer. The afterschool group had its final meeting on May 20, 2014; the students displayed their art work in a gallery showing at Tuckahoe School. The art work was on display throughout the day and during the evening spring music concert.  On Friday, June 6th, using buckets, sixth grade students in Mrs. Sicari and Mrs. Gray’s classes drew water samples from the Peconic River directly behind the Long Island Science Center. They tested for turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and examined macro-organisms under a microscope. Using their findings students assessed water quality and discussed the negative effects of environmental factors on a river.  On Friday, June 13th, the fourth grade hiked Big Fresh Pond and Morton Wildlife Refuge to explore different environments as part of the FOS Science curriculum.  Tuckahoe’s 8th Grade Graduation this year will be held on Thursday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m. Awards Ceremony for Grades K-4 on June 25 at 9:30 a.m.; Awards Ceremony for Grades 5-8 at 9:30 a.m.; Early Dismissal at 11:23 a.m. on June 25, 26 & 27.  Our St. Baldrick’s event is scheduled for Tuesday June 24th at 8:30 AM. We are very excited for this event! The link below is to Tuckahoe’s fundraising page at
