Southampton Fire Department Pays Solemn Tribute To Lost On 9/11

A ceremony will be held in Southampton to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — The Southampton Fire Department will pay solemn tribute Saturday to those who lost their lives 20 years ago on 9/11.

The ceremony will be held at the firehouse, located at 470 Hampton Road, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The event will begin with the posting of colors by the Southampton Fire Department Color Guard, followed by the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a welcome by Chief Alfred Callahan, followed with prayer by Dept. Chaplain William Patrick.

Next, Matthew O'Connor will offer remarks. A moment of silence will mark the moment the first plane, American Airline Flight 11, struck the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. with 87 onboard.

Southampton Fire Department Juniors will then participate in a laying of the wreath, followed by a moment of silence at 9:03 to mark the moment when United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower with 60 souls aboard.

Samantha and ex-Chief Chris Brenner will also speak; then, moments of silence will be held to mark the moment at 9:27 a.m. when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the U.S. Pentagon with 59 souls lost; 125 civilians and U.S. Service members died on the ground.

The collapse of the South Tower followed at 9:59 a.m. At 10:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, PA, with 40 lost.

There will be a rededication of the memorial, voices lifted in song with "Amazing Grace," a moment of silence at 10:28 p.m. for the collapse of the North Tower, and a closing prayer by Fr. Michael Vetrano.

"For each moment of silence, we ask that you stand with each other, reflect on what we went through as a nation throughout the morning, and take a moment to give thanks for what we have because of the sacrifices made," the Southampton Fire Department said.

Also in remembrance of the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, fire departments throughout the Town of Southampton will be sounding their horns and sirens to mark the major events of that dark day. Horns and sirens will be sounded at the following times:

8:46 a.m. - North Tower hit
9:03 a.m. - South Tower hit
9:37 a.m. - Pentagon hit
9:59 a.m. - South Tower collapse
10:07 a.m. - Flight 93 crashes in Pennsylvania
10:28 a.m. - North Tower collapse

"The Town of Southampton encourages everyone to pause for a moment at those times for prayers and reflection," officials said.
