Southampton High School Science Teacher Kimberly Milton attended Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s State of the State Address on Wednesday as a newly appointed New York State Master Teacher.
Governor Cuomo stated the following in his speech: “In 2013, we created the Master Teacher Program (NYSMTP), which rewards the highest-performing teachers in this system. Today we have 552 Master Teachers. These are the best of the best. These are mentors to their colleagues; they have achieved the highest scores on tests. They are teachers who go above and beyond and give more to their students than anyone has a right to ask. We are joined by them today. Let them stand so we can honor them and thank them for their contributions.”

Milton went through the application process, which included meeting the eligibility requirements, providing a personal statement, and submitting an observation report, APPR results, letters of recommendation, her resume and transcripts.

This process is designed to identify the applicant’s knowledge of content, knowledge of pedagogy, and knowledge of students.
Now that she is identified as a NYSMTP participant, she will engage in professional development and meet regularly with other Master Teachers.
She will also participate in the Empire State STEM Learning Network through regional STEM hubs, partnering with local businesses and agencies to better prepare students for STEM careers.
