Southampton School District 'Safest On Long Island', 2nd In State

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — After a Valentine's Day shooting in Florida rocked the nation and the world, parents have expressed heightened concerns over school safety.

But there's good news for Southampton parents, students, and educators: The Southampton Union Free School District has been named the second safest in New York State — and the safest on Long Island.

Niche.com's list of the Safest School Districts for 2018 was created using information from the U.S. Department of Education, the FBI, parent reviews and other data.

To compile the ranking, 50 percent was based on parent and student surveys on health and safety. Student absenteeism, suspensions and expulsions were also factored into the rankings, well as percentage of students referred to law enforcement and school-related arrests.

The rankings named Orchard Park Central School District in West Seneca as the safest district in New York.

There were 26 Long Island schools that made New York's top 100 rankings.
