SOUTHAMPTON, NY — After a severe storm ripped through Southampton Town Saturday night, Supervisor Maria Moore has declared a state of emergency through Friday.

The storm resulted in toppled trees and ignited power lines, leaving thousands of residents without power on a stifling night.

The state of emergency, Ryan Murphy, town code compliance and emergency management administrator, said, was issued "as a result of the damaging thunderstorm and high wind event that impacted our area yesterday evening. Cleanup and recovery efforts are ongoing from this storm. "

Speaking with Patch, Murphy said Hampton Bays, Flanders, Shinnecock Hills and Southampton Village were among the areas hardest hit.

"But I don't think there was really any hamlet that escaped from the path of the storm," he said. "Thankfully, some just had a lot less effects than others."

As of Sunday morning, Murphy said trees were still blocking many roads in Hampton Bays and Flanders.

"There were many situations with power lines going on fire," Murphy said. "There were trees into houses and onto cars."

As of about 3:30 a.m., as he was heading west, he saw that there was still a tree that had fallen on top of a car on Ponquogue Avenue, across from Francesca's Pizza, Murphy said.

In addition, he said, a structure fire at a residence on East Street in Flanders caused two residents to become displaced, he said.

Residents, officials said, are urged to:

  1. Use extreme caution if you must travel due to wires down, trees and tree limbs down and emergency crews working in roadways.
  2. Treat all wires as live, electrified wires and DO NOT attempt to move them.
  3. Text outages to PSEG LI by texting "OUT" to 773454.
