Thief Caught Red-Handed In Riverside: Police

He dropped the items and ran into the woods, police say.

RIVERSIDE, NY — A man was caught trying to steal in Riverside Sunday night, police said.

Southampton Town Police and New York State Police responded at 10:45 p.m. to a report of a larceny in progress, officials said.

The caller said he saw a man damage a Tonneau cover and steal items from the tailgate of a vehicle; he then dropped the items from the vehicle, as well as a backpack, and ran into the woods, police said.

Adam Tatum, 56, who has no known address, was arrested by detectives and charged with third-degree criminal mischief, a felony, and attempted petty larceny, a misdemeanor, police said.

He was processed and arraigned for a future court date, police said.
