Town Police Officer "Woody" Cantrell Dies

Frederick Cantrell of Noyac was pronounced dead at Southampton Hospital on Friday.

The announced on Saturday the death of one of their own.

Police officer Frederick "Woody" Cantrell, a member of the police department for 24 years, was reported unconscious at his Noyac home Friday night and could not be resuscitated, according to a police press release.

He was transported by to , where he was pronounced at 8:30 p.m., police said.

"Officer Cantrell leaves behind a wife, Catherine, two children, Jamie and Frederick Jr., and two grandchildren, Otis and McKayla," the release states.

Cantrell served the department in many capacities over the years, but most recently was assigned to the Southampton Town Police Department's Community Response Unit. He was a former officer in charge of the property bureau and was a member of the patrol division.

"Ultimately, no words, written or spoken, can express what a true loss this is to the community," Detective Timothy Wilson wrote in a statement on behalf of the police department. "Officer Cantrell was an excellent police officer, a tremendous asset to both this department and to this community. He was dedicated to his family, to his friends, and to the department. He will be sorely missed. To Police Officer Frederick "Woody" Cantrell #123, our fallen brother, God bless you."

Viewings will be held Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brockett's Funeral Home, in Southampton Village. The funeral will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. at  in Southampton Village followed by interment at  on County Road 39.
