Two 911 Calls In 20 Minutes For Swimmers In Distress: Cops

Six swimmers were rescued from area beaches despite the fact that the mayor had closed beaches due to dangerous conditions, police say.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Two 911 calls came in within 20 minutes regarding swimmers in distress at local beaches, police said.

According to Southampton Village Police, the calls came in on Sept. 24 from two different locations.

The first incident was called in at approximately 2:14 p.m. from the Suffolk County Park where the swimmer was able to make it out of the water, but suffered facial lacerations; Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance transported the swimmer to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

The second incident was called in at approximately 2:35 p.m. from Old Town Beach where several swimmers were reportedly in distress, police said.

Southampton Village Police officers and members of the Southampton Fire Department helped 5 swimmers to get of the water; 4 out of the 5 swimmers were transported to the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment, police said.

Southampton Village Mayor Michael Irving had ordered all beaches closed as of September 17 due to the dangerous water conditions, police said.
