Two Sag Harbor Students Chosen to Participate in Science Enrichment Program

Congratulations! Only 20 students from Long Island were chosen to take part in the program at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

SAG HARBOR, NY — Two Pierson High School sophomores made great strides in science this summer through a program at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s STEM-Prep Summer Institute.

During the four-week enrichment program, Cristina Stivala and Daniella Lejarza, who were two of only 20 students on Long Island selected to participate, took classes classes in physics, biology, chemistry, scientific computing and environmental science.

The classes aimed to engage the participants in hands-on activities related to types of research conducted at BNL, a release said.

Stivala was the only high school student chosen to present her research on catalysts to Lt. Gov. Kathleen Hochul at the conclusion of the program.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Stivala.
