The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation has identified the whale that was seen in Southampton last week.

The whale, which was originally spotted last Thursday in the Southampton area, is a right whale, which are endangered, according to the group.

It was last seen on Thursday in East Quogue.

The group reminds residents that by federal law, you must remain at least 150 feet away.

“This is also for your safety and theirs, and human interaction can be detrimental to their existence,” a post on the Foundation’s Facebook page reads.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation confirmed on their Facebook page that a whale has been sighted in the Southampton area.

The foundation reminds residents to stay a minimum of 150 feet away from all marine animals and that the whales are federally protected and interacting with them falls under harassment.
