Woman Caught Red-Handed in Southampton Deli Burglary: Police

BREAKING: The woman was caught lurking around a nearby boatyard after stealing cartons of cigarettes, police said.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A woman who tried to steal cartons of cigarettes and smashed a deli window was caught red-handed in Southampton, police said.

Candice Williams was arrested on Monday at 11:30 p.m. and charged with second degree criminal mischief, a felony, and third degree burglary, a felony, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police detectives, a call came in from a witness who saw a "suspicious person" near the South Fork Delicatessen on County Road 39 in Southampton.

Patrol officers responded and saw that the front window of the deli had been smashed, with the burglar having fled the scene, police said.

Officers searched the area and found Williams "lurking around an adjacent boatyard," police said.

With the help of a witness, detectives were able to identify Williams as the burglar, police said.

She was arrested and taken to Southampton Town Police headquarter for processing; she stole "multiple cartons of cigarettes," police said.
