9/11 Vigil: Firefighter From Carmel Added To Putnam's Heroes Monument

John Veteri, who was part of the 9/11 rescue effort and died in March at 63, will be remembered at the candlelight vigil Sunday.

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — One of the sad aspects of Putnam County's 9/11 observance in 2022 is the addition of yet another name on the Heroes Memorial.

Carmel resident John Veteri died March 11 at the age of 63. A firefighter in Larchmont, he was part of the rescue efforts at FDNY Box 5-5-87 on Sept. 11. He retired as a lieutenant in 2010.

The ceremony will take place Sunday at the Putnam Heroes Memorial at Spain Cornerstone Park, at the corner of Fair Street and Route 52 in Carmel.

The candlelight vigil will start at 7 p.m. Fair Street will be closed from Vink Drive to Route 52 at 6:15 p.m. and Route 52 will be closed from Route 301 to Fowler Avenue starting at 6:30 p.m.
