Suspect In Custody After Postal Worker Slashed With Knife At Post Office: Police

CARMEL, NY — A suspect is in custody after a stabbing at the Carmel Post Office.

Carmel Police Department officers and Putnam County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the stabbing at the United States Post Office on Fair Street in the Carmel hamlet, Town of Carmel, on Thursday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m., Putnam County 911 received a call reporting a disturbance at the post office. Updates from the dispatch center indicated that an assault had occurred and that a victim had sustained stab wounds.

Putnam County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived almost instantly to the assault in progress and deployed a Taser, and the suspect was taken into custody.

The victim, an employee of the post office, was taken by private vehicle to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. Investigators said the suspect was known to the victim. The violence appears to have been an isolated incident, and there is no known threat to the community, according to authorities.

Fair Street, between Route 52 and Vink Drive, in Carmel, was closed to traffic for about two hours while the initial investigation was underway. The investigation remains ongoing, according to Carmel Police Department detectives.

The suspect remains in custody with criminal charges pending.
