HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The weather is turning decidedly more seasonable with the coldest night of autumn so far in the overnight forecast.
Frost is probable late tonight as temperatures will drop, and the National Weather Service has issued an advisory for Orange and Putnam counties.
The advisory will be in effect from 11 p.m. on Tuesday to 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Overnight temperatures as low as 32 degrees will result in frost.
Since the frost could kill sensitive outdoor plants if left uncovered, the NWS recommends taking steps as soon as possible to protect tender plants from the cold.
Although we have enjoyed a mild autumn so far, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac, this first frost advisory of the season is right on time.
If you are in the lower Hudson Valley, Oct. 24 is the roughly the date when the first frost is expected. If you are in the mid-Hudson valley, the date is even earlier: Oct. 14.
Those are the average dates of the first frost in the Hudson Valley, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac, a time-tested publication offering a blend of long-range weather predictions mixed with humor and advice on gardening, cooking, fishing, conservation and other topics.
