Sheriffâs investigators processed the crime scene, collected evidence and interviewed the witnesses. Investigators determined that Murphy and the victim were known to each other and that, according to witnesses, Murphy was the alleged aggressor in the incident.
Investigators charged Murphy with attempted murder in the second degree and assault in the first degree, both class B felonies, and with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and endangering the welfare of a child, both class A misdemeanors. The child endangerment offense was charged because the alleged violence occurred in the presence of the victimâs granddaughter.
Murphy was arraigned before Town of Patterson Justice Anthony Mole and was remanded to the Putnam County jail without bail to await a felony hearing scheduled for May 2. If found guilty of the attempted murder and assault charges, Murphy could face up to 25 years in state prison.
