Bicycles and Pedestrian Safety: Public Hearing in Brewster

The trustees seek public input as they try to decide how best to regulate bikes.

The Brewster village board meets Dec. 17, and on the agenda again is the proposed local law regulating bicycles on sidewalks.

The proposed law has undergone revision as it has been discussed by the trustees and in the first session of a public hearing that is to continue Dec. 17.

The original draft of the law would have it unlawful to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk anywhere in the village; however, the revised version would only apply to

  • Main Street—Between the two intersections with Oak Street
  • Hoyt Street—Entire length
  • Progress Street—Entire length
  • Oak Street—Entire length

It would also be unlawful to ride a bike with a passenger perched on the handlebars, or to lay a bicycle down on the sidewalk. A bike could be parked on the sidewalk only in an upright position, in a bicycle rack or propped up by its own kickstand, and as long as it did not block people walking on the sidewalk.

Penalties include a fine of up to $250 and/or up to 15 days in jail and rise for repeat offenders.

The Board of Trustees of the Village of Brewster is holding Public Hearings followed by a Regular Meeting at 7:30 PM on 17 December 2014 at Village Hall, 50 Main Street, Brewster, New York 10509.
