I’m so excited! I’ve been waiting for this day for such a long time.
You see, I was a trustee and then President of the Brewster Library for several years. During those years, I visited many libraries in our area. You know, to get an idea of what others have done and were doing. I observed tiny libraries become beautiful big ones. More, they became not just libraries, but vigorous additions to their community in more ways than just loaning books. They became such energetic and vital contributions to their settings, it’s hard to imagine them not being there.
Katonah is one radiant example. From basically a one-room structure to one that is a working, flowing, bright and user-friendly space whose community rooms accommodate many programs, this renovation changed the face of the town almost immediately.

Then there is Mahopac. This library was destined to perish. Essentially bankrupt, it’s Board worked tirelessly to make sure it stayed open. Rather than keep it as it was, though, their Board of forward thinkers saw it as a “happening” place. Today, it is a bustling and indispensable part of the community. Programs that cater to all are so popular, there is a long waiting list. I know, because I’ve been on it.
Patterson is another. We watched as a tiny shared space with the fire department become what it is today. Patterson Library has become another praiseworthy atmosphere whose public enjoy its diverse programs, fluid space, and high-spirited atmosphere.

Then there is Kent. People drive from all over Putnam County to enjoy its offerings.
But what stood out from what I observed, was that the libraries who were renovated and expanded became cornerstones of their community. O, how I wanted the residents of Brewster to enjoy the same. The time was not right then, though.
But it is now.
On the subject of need, our Director (Gina Loprinzo) and her team have answered community requests and brought many wonderful programs into the library. While it most certainly proves there is high interest in these programs, there is no room for many others who have expressed a desire to present there. The problem is space. Plus the space that is already there is less than ideal.
But, like the libraries I mentioned, this project will not only enhance what is needed, it will be an inspiration to our community as a whole. The Board is active and engaged. The architecture, layout, and available land lend itself so well not only to the library itself, but to our town. The proposed renovation is in perfect harmony with the existing building while adding so much more to what is already there.
I’m excited because I truly love this town and the people in it. I’m so happy to be a part of making its library it as good as it can be. And this proposal has the ability to do just that.
Be excited with me and Vote YES for the Library Proposal on November 8th.
