Brewster Woman Dies at 88

Barbara F. White of Brewster died suddenly on Thursday in Carmel at the age of 88. 

She was born  Feb. 19, 1923, in Groton, MA, daughter of the late Ivan George and Carrie (Davis) Eagleson. She graduated from Groton High School in 1941, then worked as a telephone operator until she joined the United States Marine Corps where she served for three years in Washington, DC and Pearl Harbor and received the rank of sergeant before being discharged in Jan. of 1946.

On Jan. 25, 1962, she married H. Leslie White Jr. They lived in Purdys, where they also owned and operated Grey’s Market from 1968 to 1977. In 1977 they moved to Brewster and became members of Drew United Methodist Church in Carmel, where she sang in the choir and headed the Drew Prayer Chain.

White was predeceased by her husband Leslie on Jan. 27, 2004. She is survived by her son Joshua White of Brewster, daughter Valerie Hurd of Pleasantville, brother Ivan “Skip” Eagleson of San Francisco, sister Marjorie Kelly of Buena Park, CA, and five grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her son David Hurd.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Drew United Methodist Church in Carmel. Interment will be private. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 pm. at Beecher Funeral Home.
