County Civic Group Celebrates Christmas Family Drive-Thru Style
Changing the annual Christmas party didn't lessen the amount of cheer Putnam's Italian American Civic Club brought to 2021.

BREWSTER, NY — The Putnam County Italian American Social Club changed its annual kids' Christmas event this year, and everyone had a good time.
The 40-year tradition (see photos below) brings members with kids and grandchildren to the club on Route 22, with lots of food and camaraderie and, of course, Santa Claus.
The club usually does a full buffet (and we do mean full), but this year converted the operation into a drive-through under the leadership of club President Frank Catalanotto.

Santa was outside, filling the parking lot with "ho ho ho," candy canes clenched in his fist, delivering presents.

"Because of the increased COVID-19 numbers and the new omicron variant we wanted to play it safe this year," said club Vice-President Randy Calano.

It took teamwork to get everything boxed and wrapped and organized. But at least they got to pose with Santa, too.

And here to tug at your heartstrings are two photos from more than 30 years ago, when John Merlino, Sr. was the club's long-term Santa Claus.
