Couple Stopped on I-84 Face Gun Charges in Southeast

Police say they were also in possession of almost four ounces of marijuana.

SOUTHEAST, NY — New York State Police from the Brewster barracks report arresting Careem C. Campbell, 28, and 24-year-old Ashley L. Mann, both of Danbury, Connecticut, on Jan. 5.

Campbell was charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, a Class C Felony, and Criminal Possession of Marijuana 4th Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor. Mann was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree.

Police stopped a Honda Civic on Interstate 84 for failing to maintain its lane of travel. Upon detecting the odor of marijuana, the trooper directed the driver, who identified himself as Campbell, to exit the vehicle. An investigation discovered that Campbell unlawfully possessed two loaded handguns. A passenger in the vehicle, Mann, was also found in possession of a loaded handgun.

Neither possessed a permit in New York State to carry the firearms.

Police said they also discovered roughly 110 grams of marijuana in the car.

Both were arraigned in the Village of Brewster Justice Court and sent to the Putnam County Jail, Campbell in lieu of $5,000 cash bail and Mann on $1,000 cash bail. Both were scheduled to appear in the Town of Southeast Court Jan. 10.
