This course is divided into three sections: the human body, the
animal kingdom, and the plant kingdom. Students study the major body
systems through making models doing tests on their own bodies.
Classification and the five kingdoms of living things are studied as
students make an animal kingdom book.
Animal kingdom labs include examining worms, mollusks, arthropods,
and butterfly metamorphosis. Students learn about the plant kingdom
through looking at the makeup and function of seeds, flowers, leaves,
stems, and roots.

ANCIENT HISTORY: for ages 6-9: Thursdays 10:45-11:45 am: 10 weeks: $165 AND for ages 10-14: Thursdays 12:15-1:15 pm: $200
This course is designed to encourage students to develop an
appreciation and understanding of different cultures while fostering
enthusiasm and enjoyment for learning history.
Students will embark on an exciting journey back in time to learn
about the earliest peoples of Ancient Times. The first nomads of
Mesopotamia, the Sumerians, Egyptians, Babylonians, and Assyrians, as
well as the first peoples of India, China and Africa, will be explored.
Students will be introduced to these ancient peoples in chronological
order. Home readings and age appropriate class discussions, map work,
and creative hands-on activities, will make this a well-rounded learning
experience which will be continued in session 3, introducing new
peoples and places.
Hands-on activities may include: archeological digs, building
primitive shelters, heiroglyphic scrolls, building a Ziggurat Temple,
and make a Mohenjo-Daro dwelling to name but a few!
ART HISTORY WITH THE MASTERS: ages 10-14: Thursdays 9-10:15 am: 10 weeks: $225
Our art class will introduce your child to the great masters through
discovery. The class focus will not be in the imitation of great works
but in applying the qualities that make a work of art great. We will
explore different master artists within their historical, cultural,
technical and expressive qualities. This is an in depth experience that
will incorporate your child’s own self-expression.
Learn art history with an expert in the field. We all want our
children to have a strong arts background and exposure to the Masters.
The students will work with a variety of mediums and techniques. The class will tailor the lesson to every skill level.
COOKING WITH CHEF AIMEE: ages 6-9: Thursdays 12:30-1:30 pm: $180 AND for ages 10-14: 1:45-3:15 pm: $240
Please join Chef Aimee as she presents a series for children to learn
kitchen safety, hygiene, and tools of the trade. They will practice
measuring and calculating, reading recipes, making proper substitutions
and of coarse nutrition. Children will be making breads, soups, muffins,
cookies, drinks, appetizers, and simple family recipes to name a few.
Recipes and samples will be taken home each week. Children are given
weekly assignments to try at home. Older kids are given challenges that
taps into their math, science and creativity.
STEAM CLUB: for ages 6-9: Thursdays 1:45-2:45 pm: $125
The STEAM Club’s weekly experiences are built on the principle of
children doing real science with the tools and resources needed to
conduct experiments, participate in design challenges and explore
real-world STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics)
activities. We will learn through the scientific method while providing
open-ended activities to promote further learning. Children will work
in groups of 3-4 as they get their hands wet and dirty leaning about
various items such as:
The sun makes it possible to survive on Earth. As we approach Summer
we will learn about the sun, how to test sunscreen and why it’s
important, fly solar bags, make art using sun-sensitive materials and a
solar viewer.
Sound is the sensation that is produced when the organs of hearing
are stimulated by any vibrations that are transmitted through the air or
another medium. Many people can hear sounds but we will also feel them
and even see them. We will learn how sounds are produced and how they
can be manipulated.
Learn the ever-changing science of polymers as we experiment with
instant snow. Expanding instantly up to 100 times its original volume we
will learn about polymers as we build our indoor snowmen.
Students will learn the difference in the properties of air and
water. Help them discover the relationship between air pressure and
density, and how to make a floating diver more or less buoyant. Float or
sink? It’s their choice.
FUNDAMENTALS IN WRITING: ages 10-14: Thursdays 10:30-11:45 am: $150
Richard Klin is an editor and writer based in the Hudson Valley and
the author of ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM FOR BEGINNERS and SOMETHING TO SAY,
a series of profiles of various artists discussing the intersection of
art and politics. His work--fiction and nonfiction--has been featured on
NPR's ALL THINGS CONSIDERED and has appeared in the ATLANTIC, the
BROOKLYN RAIL, the FORWARD, CHRONOGRAM, and others. Richard will be
offering the following series:
Fundamentals of Writing: Learning the fundamentals of writing can be
demystified and taught without jargon: These fundamentals are building
blocks to expressive, easier writing. This session we will teach those
building blocks: parts of speech, sentence structure, the importance of
spelling and punctuation, brainstorming ideas and how to sort and
categorize them, proofreading and editing--and then going from there.
This will be learning by doing: Lots of writing (and maybe some
reading).
During the fall semester we'll continue on with more advanced
writing: narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and expository. These are
all different forms of writing, but there are connecting threads:
Writing--and writing well--is accessible, fun, and a wonderful mode of
self-expression. Students will be doing a lot of writing and reading a
few selected passages.
Here are our after public school hour classes offered on Fridays:
CHEMISTRY: LEVEL 1: ages 10-14: Fridays 4:15-5:30 pm: 11 week session: $220
This course will introduce students to matter and the study of
Chemistry. We will focus on four questions throughout this session of
Chemistry:
(1) What is an atom and how do the subatomic particles affect the properties of an atom?
(2) What is the language of Chemistry and how are the elements arranged on the periodic table?
(3) What are the differences between atoms, ions, and molecules?
(4) How are the particles of matter arranged and what properties can we predict from the arrangement of the particles?
Throughout the study, students will be using inquiry to guide their
learning and understanding of chemical principles. Students will explore
these principles through computer simulation and laboratory
investigations.
This is a continuous course of study and the next session will resume
in the Fall picking up where the Spring Session has ended. Jean will
adjust the class material based on the students previous chemistry
exposure and knowledge. She will reinforce their current knowledge and
fill in any gaps that may currently exists. Jean will then build a solid
chemistry foundation from the ground up preparing them for Advanced
Chemistry in the later years.
Students are given weekly assignments to take home and return the following class for discussion.
PHYSICS: LEVEL 1: ages 10-14: Fridays 2:45-4 pm: 11 week session: $190
We are very fortunate at CHC to offer Physics Level 1 taught by
Viktor Urvantsev. This will be a one semester course as Viktor will be
leaving us to attend MIT on a full scholarship with early admission at
the age of 16. We are hoping your children will find working with Viktor
as inspirational as we do. Viktor is very equipped to teach this class
as he has been teaching since the age of 12.
Physics level 1 will provide the building blocks of physics making it
easy for students to understand. Students explore the basic laws of
physics, force, energy, work, potential and kinetic energy, chemical
energy, electrical energy and electric charge, heat, magnets, momentum,
inertia, friction, sound, light, the conservation of energy, and more.
Material will be reinforced through hands on learning with weekly labs and take home assignments.
This is a one semester curriculum that will allow the student to gain
a solid foundation of the concept of physics and it's terminology to
help prepare them for further study.
