Ex-Treasurer to be Sentenced in Patterson FD Embezzlement

He's due in court Friday.

Albert Melin, the former treasurer of the Patterson Fire Department, will be sentenced Friday over his embezzlement of more than $1.1 million from the all-volunteer department, the Putnam County Courier reports.

Melin took money that was supposed to be used for fighting fires and other department needs, and instead used it to keep his own private businesses afloat and pay his personal bills, prosecutors said when he pleaded guilty in November.

The crime was discovered because the $5.7 million embezzlement investigation of the nearby Mahopac Fire Department prompted the Patterson fire commissioners to examine their own books.
