Feeling like you belong

Can make all the difference

By Carol Dores

I had the pleasure of spending two long days at a Positive Discipline Association Board meeting with nine Board members from around the world. We had an incredibly over-packed agenda, and ambitiously cut the time we usually spend at our bi-annual in-person meeting in half. It was amazing. We got through everything that needed to be covered, and more. The discussions were long and deep. And we walked our talk.

· Like family and class meetings, we started by sharing compliments and appreciations.

· We understood that we all see the world through a different lens.

· We appreciated hearing and understanding different perspectives.

· We worked hard at listening for understanding.

· We took breaks and other things for self-care as needed.

· We held our mistakes up high.

· We felt encouraged by one another.

· We took time to help each other learn things.

· We brainstormed without judgement.

· We solved problems together.

· We each felt like we belonged to the group.

· We took time to have fun each day.

It was an amazingly productive two days. We were all engaged and encouraged.

Positive Discipline helps create respectful relationships in homes, classrooms, board meetings….anywhere!
