HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The National Weather Service has issued warnings and watches about the unseasonably cold temperatures to expect overnight Wednesday and on Thursday. These temperatures are about 15 degrees below normal for the middle of October, so prepare yourself for the unexpected weather.

The NWS in Albany has issued a Freeze Warning, which is in effect from midnight Wednesday night to 9 AM EDT Thursday.

  • Location...The Hudson River Valley from the Poughkeepsie area up through the Capital District
  • Temperatures...In the upper 20s to lower 30s.
  • Timing...Late tonight through mid Thursday morning.
  • Impacts...Kill crops and other sensitive vegetation bringing an end to the growing season.

Gusty winds are possible within showers located just ahead and along a frontal boundary early this afternoon. In addition, winds may be gusty immediately following the passage of this front as well. Westerly gusts of 25 to 40 mph may allow for isolated downed tree limbs, which may result in a few power outages across the region.

A strong cold front will move across the Tri-State area today.
Ahead of the front, temperatures will warm into the upper 50s and lower 60s and there will be breezy west winds. There could be a few showers as the cold front moves across the region.
Gusty northwest winds in the wake of the front tonight will usher in the coldest airmass of the season. Canadian high pressure will build towards the area through Thursday. Temperatures tonight will fall into the lower 30s inland and the middle and upper 30s elsewhere. The cold temperatures will continue on Thursday as highs struggle to reach 50 degrees, despite mostly sunny skies. These temperatures are about 15 degrees below normal for the middle of October.
Temperatures will moderate back into the middle and upper 50s on Friday as the high pressure passes to our south.
