Grandfather Dies Saving Children In Lake Carmel Fire

The fire Tuesday destroyed the house, fire officials said.

LAKE CARMEL, NY — A resident of Lake Carmel died in a house fire Tuesday but not before he had saved his two grandchildren by pushing them out a window, The Journal News reported.

When the Lake Carmel Fire Department was dispatched to 21 Scarsdale Road at 10:04 p.m., Assistant Chief Donnie Lowndes discovered fire throughout the main floor of the bungalow, fire officials said on the department website.

Firefighters went into the burning home and found Jintu Zheng, 65. He was rushed to Putnam Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead, lohud.com said.

A police officer suffered smoke inhalation and was also taken to Putnam Hospital. To fight the blaze, firefighters brought water in tanker trucks as the neighborhood has no hydrants, TJN said. Read the full article on lohud.com.

Among the many agencies and volunteers providing mutual aid were Brewster, Carmel, East Fishkill, Kent, Mahopac, Patterson fire departments, Ambulanz, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, the county fire investigation team and the New York State Police, Lake Carmel fire officials said.
