Hydrant Flushing In Brewster Wednesday: What You Need To Know
Use water sparingly. Deep hot water use to a minimum. Don't do laundry. Clean strainers, seals afterward. Change the water filter.

BREWSTER, NY — The Village of Brewster will be flushing the hydrants on Wednesday, starting at 7:30 A.M. and continuing throughout the day until completed. The entire system inside and outside the village may be affected.
Pressure will be affected. Water discoloration may occur as rust and sediment are stirred up.
- Do not run your water expecting it to clear. The best course of action is to use water sparingly and allow 12 to 24 hours for the turbulence in the pipes to settle.
- Use of hot water should be kept to a minimum, as it will draw cold rusty water into your hot water tank. If your hot water tank does have rust in it, use caution and follow the manufacturer’s directions for shutting down, draining, and re-starting your hot water tank.
- Do not wash laundry. Clothing washed in rusty water can become stained. If this occurs, it is important to not dry the clothing. Instead, leave the wet clothing in the washer and apply an iron removal product as soon as possible to prevent the iron stain from setting. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Also be aware that fine sediment can be stirred up and clog the strainers on your faucets and shower heads as well as prevent the seal from seating properly in the toilet tank. You should inspect and clean the strainers and seal once the water runs clear.
- If you have a filter on the water main feeding your house it will likely prevent any sediment from reaching your appliances but you may need to change it after hydrant flushing depending on how much flow runs through it.
