Local Girl Scouts Work With Children From St. Lawrence ECLC
Brewster Girl Scout troop working on their Silver Awards received help from the kindergarten and preK-3 classes today
Girls from Brewster Girl Scouts troop #1541 teamed up with the kindergarten and preK-3 classes from St. Lawrence O'Toole Early Childhood Learning Center today. Together they decorated cards and gift bags for children in the hospital and parents who need to stay overnight at the hospital while caring for their child who is a patient. These projects are helping the girl scouts to earn Their Silver Award.
A Silver Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. It is a project that enables each girl to show their leadership and organizational skills while giving back to their communities. The girls of Troop #1541 have split themselves into two groups. One group is creating gift bags to give to children who are patients at the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital. These bags will provide the children with gifts like coloring books, crayons, crafts, and more in hopes of diverting their attention from why they are at the hospital. We hope the bags will give them a smile during a scary time. The cards that the kindergarteners made today will be put into the gift bags for the hospitalized children and all cards will contain a message of support and kindness.
The second group of girl scouts are creating gift bags for the parents who suddenly find their child having to stay at the hospital for an extended period of time. These bags will contain some basic necessities to help the parents feel more comfortable while away from home. Bags will include toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, hair brush, socks, snacks, lavender sachets, words of hope and strength as well as other items. These bags will be delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Westchester county. Today the preK 3 class sponge painted the bags being used for the parents. The bags went from a plain tan bag to a piece of artwork created by a child.

The cards and bags were decorated in a kind and thoughtful manner that can't help but to relay those feelings within the bags. Today was a great opportunity for children and teens to work together for a deserving cause. It truly was a successful event run by the girls of Troop #1541 with the support of St. Lawrence O'Toole's ECLC. Thank you to all involved!
