Mail Being Stolen From Home Mailboxes: Putnam Sheriff

Stolen checks are then altered and cashed by the suspects - for a higher amount.

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — Sheriff Kevin J. McConville warns county residents to avoid using home mailboxes for mail pickup due to recent cases of mail theft.

The Sheriff’s Office has taken a number of complaints, mostly in the Putnam Valley area, from residents who found that checks they were sending out were stolen from their mailboxes.

These checks are then altered to a much higher amount and cashed by the suspects, the Sheriff said.
