Obama on Same-Sex Marriage: Local Officials Weigh In

In Putnam, folks had mixed reactions too. Brewster Mayor Jim Schoenig said Obama's announcement was the move of a "true politician" who "flip-flopped" as the election approaches. However, he also told Patch he doesn't think same-sex marriage will have a significant impact on people's voting preferences.
"I don't think it's a big issue around here," he said.

The responses Victor Grossman, chairman of the Putnam County Democratic Committee, heard following the news were "generally positive." Grossman said he thinks many people are "a lot more accepting of the idea of marriage equality than 10 years ago."
When it comes to the impact Obama's announcement will have on voters, it will likely depend on the person, according to Grossman.

"I am sure there are people who will support Obama because of his position, and there will be people who will oppose Obama because of his position," he said. "Some have said he should have stated his position a long time ago. Others have expressed positive comments about the human factor inherent in the decision, and the natural progression of human and civil rights."
Southeast Town Clerk Michele Stancati said her office has issued a few same-sex marriage licenses , but she has yet to perform a same-sex marriage.
