Overnight Fire on Fair Street

Carmel firefighters with help from across the county battled the blaze after midnight.

CARMEL, NY — A fire overnight at 12 Fair St. brought firefighters to Carmel from across Putnam County, the Putnam County Courier reports.

The occupants of the apartment in the building just up the street from Carmel High School, which also houses Birthright of Putnam and Lorenzo's Pizzeria, escaped. The fire shot through the roof but firefighters cut into the attic with powerful saws,according to reporter Eric Gross.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. In addition to the Carmel Fire Department, volunteers from Putnam Valley, Lake Carmel, Kent, Mahopac and Patterson Valley helped fight the blaze.
