Putnam County Residents Invited to Participate in 9/11 Day of Service- Letter Writing Campaign

A Letter Writing campaign is an opportunity for our residents to write "Thank You" letters to responders, uniformed servicemen/women.

On September 11, 2001, a bright autumn day was darkened by the worst attack on American soil
in our history. On the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, as a way to pay tribute to, and remember the victims and
others we wish to honor, we put aside whatever differences we may have at the moment, and work together to
help others in need. September 11th was designated a national day of service by the 2009 Kennedy Serve
America Act. Hundreds of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, and schools and businesses nationwide
will be implementing community service projects nationwide

Putnam County residents will step up in service to mark the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks for the
September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance as well!

The VetCorps Project, Putnam County Communities That Care Coalition, and Putnam County Office of
Veterans Services will be sponsoring a “Letter Writing “ campaign which is an opportunity for our residents
to write “Thank You” letters to responders, uniformed servicemen/women, Veterans, police officers, EMS
first responders, and firefighters in order to show appreciation to them for their dedicated service. The letter
writing session will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at the Cornerstone Park building, located at 1
Fair Street, Carmel, NY, from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. On behalf of the Putnam County Executive Office a
generous donation of American Flags will be given to the first 200 letter writers!

“September 11th is a day of history, emotion, and reflection,” said Chauntel Wright the Prevention Coordinator
of the Vetcorps Program. “For many Americans it is also a day of service that provides an opportunity to join
neighbors and local leaders to rekindle the compassion and unity shown on that day.”

Residents are asked to come to the Cornerstone location on 9/11/14 and write their “thank you’s. The cards will
then be separated and mailed accordingly. Putnam County residents will be joining hundreds of thousands of
Americans across the country in this community service. Your kind words of thanks and encouragement will
reach service members who may be abroad and/or away from their families.
