Restaurants and bars are great places for people to socialize and have a good time. Unfortunately, that good time can get out of hand when people misuse alcohol. Servers must be able to deal with problem behaviors and the challenges associated with underage drinking and drunk driving.
On June 10, 2014, local restaurants and other on-premise businesses attended the On-Premise Responsible Beverage Training, or TIPS training, sponsored by the Putnam County Communities That Care (CTC) Coalition. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Coalition and were also in attendance at the training. The training was facilitated by Bruce E. Kelly, Esq., Training Consultant for the Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center and took place at the Bureau of Emergency Services building in Carmel, NY.
“As Sheriff of Putnam County, I appreciate the continuing efforts made by the Putnam County Communities That Care Coalition in providing educational programs aimed at protecting our citizens. I believe that by providing the Responsible Beverage Training opportunity to our area merchants, injuries and deaths from motor vehicle crashes can be reduced,” said Sheriff Donald B. Smith

TIPS for on premise businesses, or businesses that have alcohol consumption on-site, empowers employees to take a proactive approach toward preventing alcohol misuse and maintaining control of the environment. By training staff to recognize the signs of intoxication, one can reduce the chance that an alcohol-related incident will occur. TIPS-trained servers show customers that businesses care about them and want to make their visits to their establishments as pleasant as possible.
TIPS training can also improve business and community relations. TIPS certification demonstrates a commitment to prevent alcohol-related problems and a desire to be part of the solution in society's fight against drunkenness. Liquor boards and local authorities tend to look favorably on establishments that incorporate TIPS, which can lead to more lenient penalties in the event of an alcohol violation.
