Putnam Coronavirus Update: Hospitalizations Jump

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Putnam County jumped by 466 last week, according to health officials.
The total of confirmed cases since the outbreak began was 4,137 as of Dec. 17, the county reported Monday, up from 3,671 reported as of Dec. 10. By far the most cases have been in Carmel, Putnam's most populous town.
There were 24 people hospitalized with COVID-19 at Putnam County hospital at the end of last week, up from 15 people the week before.

Hospitalizations, like deaths, are called "lagging indicators" because it takes 3-4 weeks after people get infected that those with severe cases of COVID-19 end up in the emergency room.
